About the Math Playgroup
Why: After spending years as a private tutor and classroom teacher, I've realized that children learn best when exploring with other children in a small group with the support of a dedicated adult. While there are times when one-on-one tutoring makes sense, most children benefit from an intimate, small learning group. In this environment, children not only receive individual guidance from their adult mentor, they also learn through their interactions with each other. A joyous, playful environment with like-minded peers allows children to take academic risks and develop a deeper love for mathematics.
When: The Math Playgroup can be held on any weekday after school hours. Each day is limited to a single playgroup class with 2-6 children of the same grade/age level. Playgroup classes last 1 hour for kindergarten and first grade children and 1.5 hours for children in grades 2-5. Playgroup sessions can be scheduled for either 6 or 8 weeks, with flexible vacation schedules.
Where: The Math Playgroup is held at Alycia's spacious, light-filled apartment in Cobble Hill on Dean Street between Court St. and Smith St.
Who: The Math Playgroup is led by Alycia Zimmerman, a state certified elementary school teacher with a Gifted and Talented subspecialty. Alycia is also an education consultant and writer for Scholastic.com, a mentor for education college students through the SUNY system, and an NYC Big Apple Award recipient for teaching excellence. Alycia has many years of private tutoring experience and can provide parent references upon request. Alycia is currently on maternity leave, and thus has the time to pursue one of her passions - furthering children's love of math. Prior to teaching, Alycia attended Princeton and Fordham Universities and worked as an editor in academic publishing.
Cost: The Math Playgroup fees depend on the age of the students, the number of classes per session, and the number of children per session. Fees will be reduced for "founding families" who organize playgroups of 4 or more children.
